What is dance and movement psychotherapy?

Dance and movement therapy is a form of expressive psychotherapy grounded in psychological theories of human development, as well as physiological and neurological foundations that affirm the deep interconnection between body and mind, each continuously influencing the other. This approach starts from the understanding that movement is a person's first language - a fundamental means of communication and expression that precedes spoken language.

In movement therapy, movement is not seen merely as physical activity, but as a symbolic, non-verbal language expressing feelings, memories, desires, fears, needs, relational patterns, and conscious and unconscious psychological processes. By listening to the body, observing movement patterns, working with improvisation, and engaging within the therapeutic relationship, a client can explore their inner world, give new meaning to their experiences, and develop more flexible and adaptive ways of relating to themselves and others.

Dance and movement therapy offers a safe therapeutic space for exploration and experimentation, where body and mind meet in an integrated process that strengthens physical and emotional awareness, supports the capacity to regulate emotions, self-expression, and building a sense of inner safety and psychological resilience.

Dance and movement therapy aims to strengthen the integration of body and mind, support psychological, emotional, and social growth, and enable a person to connect more deeply with themselves and their surroundings - contributing to psychological well-being and a life lived with presence, awareness, and fullness.
